Yet another “about me” blog…
Hopefully I can make my “about me” a little more interesting than the average 5 min rambling of a companies mission statement….So… This is me…
I have been in the footwear industry for more than 6 years and have experience across the board, from Value for money – tight price point footwear and private labels to customised “go crazy” sneakers, both men’s and women’s. I have a strong technical knowledge and an acute eye for design. I Graduated from De Montfort University with a BA Honours in footwear design and 3 years worth of student loan to pay back. Since then I have overseen and developed branded ranges, from concept to production, developed product in the Far East, worked with licensed products, eaten a strange diced yellow chicken at a factory in the sticks of Wenzhou (more than once..) and much more.
However, my love affair with shoes began long before I realised footwear design was the career for me. My great granddad was a cobbler with a shop in Hackney, my Granddad was a cobbler with a shop in Soho and my grandmother was a seamstress. With 2 generations of English heritage footwear and a passion for fashion, it was inevitable I would be strongly influenced by my forefathers chosen profession. The smell of neo-prene glue, the cobblers tools lying about on top of the sewing machine and work bench. Investigating as a small child, and as small children do – accidentally breaking things. This world fascinated and intrigued me, I was drawn to it. From as early as I can remember, the question I was frequently asked as a youngster at family events “What do you wanna do when you grow up Matt?” was always answered with “shoes”.
Now I work for myself, trying to make my daily bread in this crap economy. This website is newly launched in 2012, part of my all out offensive to become a millionaire as quickly as possible! My intentions for this website are first and foremost for it to be a place for me and like minded people to discuss, analyse and interpret fashion. There will be blogs and posts, illustrator tutorials, links and (later on) some tweets!
Although it’s the 21st Century and this is a website, I can’t help but think that in my own way I am carrying on a part of “my family business”. I suppose in some ways this page is more of a dedication to my family and a nod to Gramps – thanks.
